A maintenance brief that fits the property

Picture four columns on a simple triage board. The first contains anything preventing ordinary use: a narrowed route, growth against a gate or material concealing a surface. The second records living features that deserve protection, including valued plants, useful screening and established shapes. The third holds routine presentation jobs. The final column contains ambitions that change the garden, such as new turf, fencing or a redesigned area. The urgent column is considered first, but urgency does not erase judgement. Opening a path may require selective reduction around plants that remain; revealing a patio can expose unstable material that cleaning will not repair. The quotation can then allow for protection, gathering and waste rather than pricing only the visible cutting. Anything hazardous, structural or outside ordinary gardening receives a clear exclusion and another assessment route.

The protection column shapes how the rest proceeds. A shrub may look oversized yet provide essential privacy. A planted edge may be untidy because neighbouring growth has crowded it, not because everything should be removed. Marking keepers and describing their function prevents a fast but irreversible result. Seasonal condition matters too: a particular cut may be delayed while compatible weeding, edging or route work continues. Triage is not a licence to ignore lower columns; it is a method for choosing the responsible order.
